Your Guide to Profitable Plenty of Fish (POF) Campaigns

I have been receiving a lot of feedback about putting together some Plenty of Fish case studies, so here you go! If you are struggling with POF, don’t worry. It’s not an easy beast to tackle and I didn’t make money on the first campaigns I built. As with any traffic source, it takes time, and more importantly, money.

With my help, you will be able to start building profitable campaigns on POF and start making some serious money there.

Building Profitable POF Campaigns

In my experience, I have done really well building campaigns that contain a number of factors. I suggest you test different aspects when building your ads. If you haven’t yet, check out my post about making profitable dating ads. That is a VERY good starting point when working with POF/FB and should put you in the right mindset.

Broad Targeting

While many claim broad targeting does not work well, I beg to differ. Some of my most successful campaigns have been, and still are, targeted rather broad. Here is a screenshot of one of my campaigns that was doing VERY well for me.

I have found the key to success using this method lies heavily on the picture you choose. Also, you need to be creative with the title, and inputting user attributes (as I did) definitely helps the CTR of your ads. The key is to cycle through pictures frequently and keep it fresh. Too often I see 3 identical ads next to each other, and whether that is one person trying to get volume, or a bunch of not-so-creative marketers trying to make a buck, that is not how you build a profitable campaign.

I wrote about why to not copy Facebook campaigns, and I think this should be for POF as well.

Semi-Broad Targeting

The more attributes you target, the lower the demographic size. However, if you are targeting well, you should be able to achieve a higher CTR and lower cost. Put that together, scale it, and you have yourself a decent set of campaigns.

Again, think about the amount of competition. Just like with very broad campaigns, I would highly suggest cycling through different pictures/copy on your ads if you want to build campaigns that last longer than a week.

Extremely Tight Targeting

Drilling down further should lower costs even more, increase CTR, and more importantly increase margins. The key to this strategy is to have MANY different campaigns that are very tightly targeted. Also, you can use niche dating offers using this strategy as they work very well.

Again, make sure you have a lot of these running and recycle the images OFTEN. Since the demographic size is so tight, they will usually dry up in 4-7 days. Keep it fresh. Also, think about the number of possibilities of how you could laser target campaigns. It really is endless, and there is A LOT of money sitting on the table right now.

I have personally made money using each of these methods, but it’s a matter of finding the right mix of offer, targeting, and of course image/copy.

Another method to use would be building landing pages per FTC-Hater’s suggestion at WickedFire. This method takes more time and money to set-up properly, but I’ve had offers converting at 40% using that strategy. It works.

Man, it is funny how some things are so easy for me to profit with and then something like this I just suck at.

I’ll need to read this over and over and try dating on POF again.

Cool Browie. It does take time and testing, but read through the making profitable dating ads post I wrote too and incorporate many of those aspects. Even if you build small campaigns, you should still be able to make $10+ profit day with great margins!

Awesome tutorial on POF Jeremy!

Just a question, when I write an ad title do I do {state:} or do I have to do this {state:default}?

Thanks

Reply

Jeremy July 23, 2010 at 3:52 am

You could do either. What I do sometimes is “Find a Great {state:Local} Date” or something along those lines just in case, but you do not need a default.

None of those ads would get approved now LOL. Now we don’t allow ads to be written in the 1st person and requires a call to action that suggests to our users they are leaving our site (sign up, register). Please note “click here” does not suffice because it does not carry the same indication.

So the 1st example, wouldn’t fly but the other 2 require the “sign up/register” verbage.

Other than that, great post!

Right Ben, that’s why I stated “was doing well” ;-)

The point is to be creative and don’t just make the title: “Meet Hot Women”

Thanks for the comment!

Haven’t really messed around with POF yet in volume. I guess I don’t really plan to either, but I should.

@jtGraphic: There’s plenty of money to be had but it depends on your business model. Thanks for commenting.

Jeremy

Best advise I have ever read on the web about POF.

Can you please explain this statement more

“This language doesn’t get approve easily on POF”

But then how are you manage to put these ads on POF?

Thanks

Sukh

@Sukh – Those were some of my older ads, I’m not going to reveal ads that are doing well now. Just be creative and you will find something that works.

Jeremy

Thanks for your guidance.

What other type of niches are successful on POF other than dating? I have heard few people saying that they are using POF for advertising Clickbank or Other Non dating affiliate products. Have you tried anything?

Cheers

Jeremy July 26, 2010 at 11:10 am

Sukh, I have tried some others, but you really just need to test things. Think about demographics and the mindset of POF users and try to tailor your advertising to meet those needs.

Good luck!

Just found your blog and I’m loving it. But can you give some advice on where to get images for FB and POF?

The ones in this post don’t looked to be bought off a Stock Photo site. Do we need to be worried about copyright or other legal issues from just grabbing pics off random sites?

As you showed in your posts we need to be testing 100s of images and ad copy. Buying all those images is not feasible. Since a simple FB test would cost 100s just for the images plus you won’t be able to compete since stock photos are not amateur looking.

Curious how you deal with these issues since you do a ton of FB/POF testing. Thanks.

Tony, there are 2 ways you could get amateur images.

1. Ask friends on Facebook (or friends of friends) if you can use their picture for a study you are doing or simply tell them you want to just use it for a dating ad – This actually does work
2. “Borrow” them – Not recommended but this also works

Jeremy,
Awesome post! I have never advertised on POF before. Perhaps I will give it a shot one of these days. I signed up for your newsletter and can’t wait for the Ryan Eagle interview. I’m a huge fan of interviews and know that it’s going to be huge.
All the best,

Ian,

Great! There have been some questions lately about traffic quality from POF so I’m curious how that pans out.
I’m going to be sending the interview out today or tomorrow, I’m glad you signed up!

Great post man!! I think I definitely need to go test out POF again. It was actually the first place I ran a campaign when I started AM back in Feb. I was promoting the truth about abs clickbank product with some horrible creatives and copy(now that I look back on it), but I actually broke even. I guess that should have told me something, but I really wanted to try other sources out. Now that I have tried just about everything, I think it might be time to go back to where I started. This post will definitely help me out, and hopefully I can start making some consistent profit. Thanks again for sharing.

Hi, great post!…But, how much of these infos are still accurate after almost 5months? (we know the ad copies dont work anymore)

also, for each level of targeting, how did you bid?

anyway, its quite impressive if you indeed had lots of success with broad targeting like that! Specially DL…I would think ads get low ctr’s even if they have dynamic insertions with the right pics since the targeting brings a big big amount of impressions in no time…

Jeremy December 29, 2010 at 11:20 am

Check out what is working right now and build on it.

In terms of bidding, bid high enough to get impressions, that always changes as well.

Good luck!

How do you find session depth and login count affects your CTR ?

Jeremy June 4, 2011 at 10:51 am

Great question George. I actually have not done a case study analyzing those attributes (been doing more SEO work lately).

I’m pretty sure Riley Pool did a case study involving either or both, so that may be a good place to look.
